Falkirk FC Graves - Thomas Bellingham

I will not beat about the bush, Tom Bellingham was a bit player in the history of Falkirk FC, he started the 1885/86 season as the first choice goalkeeper until he was eventually replaced by John Mitchell, the following season he returned as the reserve Centre-Forward, occasionally filling in at Centre-Half. But even here he was superceded with the return of Sandy Gillespie & David Fleming so he returned to the reserves never to play for the first team again.

It seems that his family had moved to Falkirk from Ulster by the time he was about 4-5 as his two younger sisters were born in the town according to the 1881 census, so he is as much a Bairn as I am [and I am].

Like I always say with really early players, his career looks poor in numbers of senior matches alone, but the fact is that there was no league, and he played much longer with the club being a stalwart of the 2nd XI for many a year [The latest I have found him is playing with Falkirk ancients in 1894].

As with most people in Falkirk at the time he was employed in one of the town's many foundries as an iron-moulder until his retiry, whereupon he became janitor of St Modan's Church.

[oh, and it seems he died in the same street as I live in]

Obscure Falkirk FC Matches - 9th Aug 1910

As anybody who reads this ought know by now, I delight in bringing to light all those things that [probably] should never be brought to light: herein, I bring you another in my [neverending [I warn you!]] list of obscure Falkirk FC matches. These matches ought naturally have been consigned to the dustbin of history: but that is exactly where the good historian looks, so here is another of Falkirk Football Club's pre-Season trial matches.

This time it comes from 1910 [when sadly Falkirk had a striped away top [though I still don't know the colours of the stripes]].

Nothing much unconventional about this match, except that it was played in only two periods of 35 minutes, I love these matches [Falkirk recently tried to re-introduce them but lack of turnout meant they have either stopped or only been played closed door!]]. The thing to understand is that with no pre-season friendlies this was the first place to see any closed season signings [[and triallists] and any up and coming reserves about which gossip...].
Anyway these are how the teams appear in the local press

Tuesday 9th August 1910, Trial Match at Brockville Pk, Falkirk

Blues - Adams [Queen's Park]; Stewart [Falkirk Amateurs] & Leishman; Orrock, Morison & Johnston; Simpson & Gilmour, A.Logan, T.Logan [Arthurlie] & Brown.

Stripes - Stewart; Davidson [South Shields Adelaide] & Gibson [Morton]; McDonald, Anderson & McMillan; Main & Morton, English, Croall & Smith.

Scorers - Unknown

Attendance - c4000

Note - To dissavert any criticism by Spiders' historians: out of the twenty two players Adams of Queen's Park appeared because the match was also played in benefit of the Falkirk Nursing Association [raising c£16] not because he was looking for a transfer.

In a break from the norm, one of my friends & confidents, when it comes to teasing out the delicacies of local football in Falkirk/Stirlingshire one of my most important devil's advocates is now collating the hellish weave of local club football over on his new website. I think all should give attention to his slavish attention to detail.

There is a whole shit load there, and there is a shit load needing done [says the person who promised to research early Falkirk Amateurs; hands up [still on it]] it is [as all are] a work in progress, work, laziness and 'stuff' get in the way, but we're on it, I promise you.

Obscure Falkirk FC Matches - Trial Match 7th August 1954

Way back in the day, before pre-season friendlies & training camps, Falkirk FC usually kicked off every season with one or two 'trial' matches, these usually took the form of game one the League attack with the Reserve defence, versus their opposites, followed by the likely League XI versus the reserves, but there were usually substitutes [but more often players just swapped sides] done at half time to try things out. Sometimes the games were just between two 'blended' XIs and from the performances the second match XIs were picked.

At the start of 1953/54 & 1954/55 there was only one match, however, and these were especially strange matches as they were played over three periods of thirty minutes each, and several line-ups were used throughout the match, the details of the 1954 was well recorded and the details are below.

Falkirk Reserves - Scottish League Division C 1949/50

For a long time part of Falkirk FC's history has been consigned to a mere footnote in the many works on Scottish Football. From 1949 until 1955 Falkirk 'A', along with several other reserve sides, played in the Scottish League Division C. These were officially sanctioned league matches and therefore ought count in a player's record. The problem is that Division C was so close to being a reserve league that both local and national media treated it as such. In later years the Scottish League Division C Cup was also added. These matches are an anomaly, however no matter our opinion of them they are senior matches and ought be treated so.

[this has had some additions made to it thanks to one of my partners on the Scottish Football Forum.]

Falkirk 2nd XI v Lenzie 2nd XI - Sat 29th Mar 1879

Falkirk Herald - Sat 5th Apr 1879

FALKIRK JUNIOR v LENZIE JUNIOR

Encouraged by the success which attended the first fifteen of the Lenzie Football Club while pitted against Falkirk, a match between the above clubs was arranged and took place on Saturday at Randyford, the ground of the former. For junior elevens, the two teams were as well matched as were the seniors, and the play of Saturday was quite as good as during the successful game which was played between the seniors some time ago. In the contest some dexterous playing was manifested, reflecting no small degree of credit upon both sides. No goals were secured and although at intervals the home team made several raids upon the enemy's territory, it cannot but be said that the strangers had the superiority. During the first half the Falkirk men kicked against the wind, but by no means to such good purpose as did the strangers in the second half. Some showers of rain fell during the progress of the game, but did not seriously interfere with it, and a considerable number of spectators turned out. For the home team J.M'Allum perhaps made the cleanest runs towards the enemy's goal, while the playing of T.Hamilton, W.Binnie, A.Ferguson, and T.Taylor was altogether of a masterly description. F.Archer, the captain of the Lenzie club, made one or two splendid kicks during the play in his position as back, and P.Proudfoot and P.Cree were equally serviceable. Teams :- Lenzie- Goal, H.A.Walker; backs, A.M.Barretto, O.Burk; half-backs, H.Chalmers, J.K.Walker; forwards, F.Archer, P.Proudfoot, F.A.Plae, W.Bremner, J.Forrester, P.Cree. Falkirk - Goal, W.McNair, backs, L.Watson, H.Smith; half-backs, G.Richardson, W.Gentleman; forwards, W.Binnie, T.Hamilton, J.Bennett, J.M'Allum, T.Taylor, A.Ferguson.

Notes - J.McAllum was also spelt McCallum in match reports, the Falkirk goalkeeper at this point was actually David McNair, the paper made an error.
