The Falkirk Derby

Falkirk & East Stirlingshire have been playing one another off and on since 1881, as you would expect, occasionally the two clubs had a 'lovers tiff' and did not meet in friendlies for seasons at a time, which was a daft thing even back then as it was the biggest match in the county by a country mile, but the two teams were mostly neck and neck as two who was the best so had reasons to fall out whenever the other gained a little advantage.

Like most football rivalries [unlike, say .... Glasgow] the rivalry was firmly rooted in locality and not any other silly things: East Stirlingshire was Bainsford, Falkirk were from the town centre. Originally there was a slight class difference in the two clubs ESFC mainly made up of men who worked in the foundries of those parts, where Falkirk had a more middle-class make up with many shop workers and office workers in the club, however this difference did not last long, and nothing was ever made of the difference in the published media, I was merely stating it as a demographic fact.

For the most part, before professionalism the Falkirk players came from Falkirk and the East Stirlingshire players from Bainsford, players from the middle ground [ie Grahamston] would pop up in either, and quite often both.

I will try to put all the known details of every Falkirk v East Stirlingshire Match on this page, will attempt to add a match a day so will get their in a year or so ....
